Chesapeake Crescent Initiative

Recently, the Chesapeake Crescent Initiative, a regional collaboration of public and private partners seeking to establish the Mid-Atlantic region, including Delaware, Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia, as the national center for innovation in the energy, life sciences and security industries, selected Newark to be the first pilot city for its “Safe + Smart Cities” program. This was a great honor that came at the recommendation of Governor Markell, in recognition of our City’s “visionary leadership,” our “citizen-centric, service-oriented approach” and our track record of being able to refine and implement unique and innovative solutions.

Leaders from the finance, legal and technology industries, as well as federal and state representatives, analyzed Newark, and made numerous recommendations on how technology can be better leveraged to improve government functions and service delivery. By allowing Newark to work “smarter,” these recommendations promise to improve the city’s communication within government and to better engage our citizenry, as well as better understand and mitigate risks, as our city continues to evolve.

We invite you to read further about the in-depth recommendations made by the industry experts of the Chesapeake Crescent Initiative, many of which have been, or are in the process of being, implemented.
